Antisemitism in a Society Shaped by Migration
Experiences, Discourses, and Manifestations of Antisemitism in Russian- and Ukrainian-Speaking Migrant Milieus

Since February 24, 2022 (the start of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine) and October 7, 2023 (the Hamas terrorist attack on the Israeli civilian population and the war in Gaza), these groups have been marked by various forms of political uncertainty. Against this backdrop, AntOstMig examines changes in individual experiences of and collective discourses on antisemitism, paradigmatic formations of antisemitism on social media that shape these milieus, and how antisemitism is discussed within the “Eastern migrant” communities of a society shaped by immigration.

Three sub-projects investigate the experiences and experiential knowledge of a sample group of Jewish individuals. Secondly, we conduct a discourse-analytic evaluation of antisemitic imagery and excerpts of text from these groups’ social media channels, focusing on their historical context and transnational evolution. Thirdly, focus group discussions with Jewish and non-Jewish actors from civil society organizations are used to identify knowledge systems that reveal collective ways of framing antisemitism and lines of conflict within the field. The project is being developed in close cooperation with active members of civil society who play an integral role in the research process; through Participatory Action Research, they ensure the transfer of knowledge to society.
