Antisemitism Among Students at German Universities
Manifestations, Spread, and Function
Antisemitism is a highly variable form of resentment, and its manifestations are subject to change. In recent years, Israel-related antisemitism has come to the fore among various groups. This research project will examine the role of antisemitism as a unifying force, particularly in the mobilization of young adults and on college campuses following October 7, 2023.
As a first step, the researchers will use a representative sample to quantitatively assess the prevalence and intensity of antisemitic attitudes. In-depth interviews will then be conducted with selected participants. The study focuses on the functions, meanings, and hybrid forms of antisemitic sentiment, paying particular attention to how these manifested both before and after October 7, 2023.
Antisemitic sentiment among students at German universities are at the center of the research because there has been little reliable data to date on Israel-related antisemitism within this group. Furthermore, the study aims to examine the emergence and persistence of antisemitism among various groups, with students serving as a case study.
With these findings, researchers can gain a better understanding of the mechanisms driving antisemitic sentiment and how new forms of it arise. This data also offers an opportunity to draw conclusions regarding broader societal trends. The research will incorporate the perspectives of Jewish students and faculty members, as well as university representatives for issues of antisemitism.
Sub-project: Monitoring, Consultation, and Intervention
AnSU-MBI addresses the dissemination of knowledge and practical application of the initiative “Antisemitism at German Universities,” led by the German Institute for Human Rights and its department of human rights education.
The sub-project examines reporting, consultation, and intervention mechanisms and structures within higher education; it evaluates these against human rights standards and experience in the field and develops appropriate practical recommendations.
