Israel-Related Antisemitism as a Challenge for Memorials and Sites of Remembrance

This collaborative project examines the challenges of addressing Israel-related antisemitism at former concentration camp memorials and sites of remembrance associated with the Nazi period. This initiative interviews management and staff at eight locations across Germany, paying particular attention to educational and pedagogical concerns.

Sub-project 1: October 7, 2023: A Turning Point in the Culture of Remembrance?

Scholarly Research on Israel-Related Antisemitism at German Memorials

This sub-project focuses on scholarly research on Israel-related antisemitism at former concentration camp memorials and Nazi-era sites of remembrance. In addition to conducting and analyzing interviews, Touro University is organizing an academic conference and will publish a study upon conclusion of the project.

As part of the project, interviews are being conducted with management and educational staff at a total of eight concentration camp memorials and sites of remembrance of Nazi crimes, in close cooperation between Touro University Berlin and the House of the Wannsee Conference memorial and educational site. These interviews are supplemented by group discussions with freelance guides. The project examines whether and how Israel-related antisemitism has influenced the work of these memorial sites since the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, and the subsequent war in Gaza.

The project at Touro University focuses on scholarly analysis and critical engagement; the project will host an inaugural conference and develop and publish a study on this research. Drawing on research findings and discussions held throughout this initiative, the project will develop a set of guidelines in collaboration with practitioners from the memorial sites and experts in education on antisemitism. These guidelines are intended to help memorial sites recognize and effectively counter Israel-related antisemitism in the future.

Sub-project 2: Pedagogical Practice at Memorial Sites Following October 7, 2023

New Didactic Approaches to Addressing Israel-Related Antisemitism at German Memorial Sites

The project at the House of the Wannsee Conference focuses on developing pedagogical approaches.
